You know you want to get married in Hawaii. “But how do we make it legal?!” This is a question that I constantly get as a wedding officiant based in Hawaii. Let me ease all of your worries and stresses. The process to get a Hawaii marriage license is SHOCKINGLY easy. Follow these step-by-step instructions and you are good to go!

Step by step Hawaii Marriage License instructions:

1. Apply for your marriage license online here prior to your arrival or in person.
2. Upon your arrival to Hawaii, you pick up the Marriage License document from the Hawaii State Department of Health at 1250 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu. The office is open from 8am-4pm, Monday – Friday (closed state and federal holidays). **Keep this in mind with when your arrival date and your wedding date. You will want to allot a few days to ensure you have time to pick up the license before your ceremony** You can also make an appointment with a list of licensed agents here.
3. When physically obtaining the license, you both need to be present. The only legal documentation required is a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. If previously married, proof of original divorce decree or death certificate only needs to be presented if the divorce or death was finalized within 30 days of applying for a marriage license. State of Hawaii Marriage License fee of $65.
4. The Marriage Certificate indicates that a legal marriage has been performed. After the event, your officiant. will file the Marriage License with the State of Hawai’i. The Marriage License and Marriage certificates are two different documents. The Marriage License permits a marriage to take place.
5. The state will mail your Marriage Certificate document to the forwarding address you listed on the application within 4 to 6 weeks.
